NAS Earlybird Contacts

In Brief
THE ESSENTIAL training programme from the National Autistic Society, for parents whose children have Autistic Spectrum Disorders, available in Barnsley. Back to top
EarlyBird Programme
EarlyBird is for families who have a child under 5 years, each family is offered 2 places on the programme which runs for about 3 months. There are up to 6 families on each programme which consists of 8 group sessions at the Barnsley centre each lasting 3.5 hrs, there are also 6 home visits - before, during and after the programme. These involve videoing parent and child playing together and then reviewing the tape and looking at what works well, how things may be developed etc..

Aims of the NAS EarlyBird Programme:

a) to support parents in the period between diagnosis and school placement.
b) to empower parents and help them facilitate their child's social communication
and appropriate behaviour within the child's natural environment.
c) to help parents establish good practice in handling their child at an early age so
as to pre-empt the development of inappropriate behaviours Back to top
EarlyBird Plus Programme
The NAS EarlyBird Plus Programme offers support to families of slightly older children who were unable to access an EarlyBird Programme.

The NAS EarlyBird Plus Programme aims to maximise consistent help for the child by training parents and professionals together. The programme content focuses on good practice and aims to build confidence in both parents and professionals whilst encouraging the teams to problem solve together.

The new EarlyBird Plus programme also runs for 3 months, and is for families who may have received a slightly later diagnosis - up to 8 years. The programme works with only 4 families as each family is offered 3 places, 2 for the family and 1 for a professional who is currently working with the child - this team approach is proving to be very popular with both families and professionals. The 8 sessions are 2.5 hours in length, there are 2 home visits but these do not involve any videoing as the child is generally at school. Back to top
Referral
Both of the programmes are parent (not professional) referral - all families need to do is ring and they will be registered for the next information meeting when they can come and meet other families and find out more about the relevant programme. Back to top
